Galle Dutch Fort

The Galle fort is a world heritage site and the largest remaining fortress in Asia built by European occupiers. Dutch fort of Galle is also called as ‘Ramparts of Galle’.  Originally one of Sri Lanka’s oldest lighthouses, built in 1848, it was unfortunately destroyed in a fire in 1934, before being rebuilt in 1939. It was initially constructed by the Portuguese but extensive modifications were carried out by the Dutch in the 17th century making it one of the most significant archaeological, architectural and historical place which depicts the European influence in south East Asia.

It covers an area of 52 hectares inside the walls. A lighthouse installed on the Utrecht bastion, and a tower erected for the jubilee of Queen Victoria in 1883. The fort has a colorful history, and today has a multi-ethnic and multi-religious population. The best way to experience Galle Fort is to explore it on foot.
