Udawalawa National Park

Udawalawe National Park, is one of the best places in the world to see wild elephants. The park is known for elephants, water buffaloes, wild boar, spotted deer and fishing cats and jungle cats. Originally, the national park was created to provide a sanctuary for wild animals displaced by the construction of the Udawalawe Reservoir in 1972. The waterways are home to crocodiles, a myriad of butterflies, and many birds including an endemic Sri Lankan subspecies of jungle fowl. The habitat surrounding the reservoir includes marshes, the Walawe river and its tributaries, forests and grasslands Green algae and blue green algae grow in the reservoir.
