Sigiriya Rock Fortress

A UNESCO World Heritage Site and sometimes known as the 8th wonder of the world, the Sigiriya Rock Fortress is a timeless example of just one of the many remnants of the great kingdoms that existed within Sri Lanka. The site plan of Sigiriya is considered to be remarkably imaginative. There is a complex arrangement of parks and reservoirs here that embrace the concepts of symmetry and asymmetry beautifully. Before Sigiriya became a Kingdom, Sigiriya Rock base and the places such as Pidurangala which were endowed with many caves and a temple had been dwelled by Buddhist monks from around 3rd Century BC. There are water gardens, boulder gardens and terraced gardens that would have looked mesmerizing during the kingdom’s heyday. Some of the hydraulic systems of the complex work even today.
