Yapahuwa Rock

A royal residence in 13th century Yapahuwa was able to preserve some interesting remains. Of all the ancient ruins in the country the Rock Fortress Complex of Yapahuwa is considered to be quite remarkable despite the fact that it is not famous among most visitors. Highlights of the site include the steep steps, elaborately adorned by statues of lions in an unusual design, modern temple complex and the breath-taking views from the top. Yapahuwa was a strong rock fortress and a palace to the king. Soon after the death of King Buvanekabahu in 1284, Pandiyans of South India invaded Sri Lanka again. Today it is one of the country is most unique and important sites of historic interest containing abundant traces of ancient battlements and remnants of king Buvenekabahus (1273-1284 AD) kingdom.
